Fantasy
Any fan of classic fantasy films will remember the scene above. It's from "Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger" and is where princess Farah, played by Jane Seymour, is about to meet a troglodyte for the first time. The hero, Sinbad, turns up with his men and are about to engage the Troglodyte in combat when the wise man Melanthius, played by Patrick Troughton of Doctor Who fame, stops them by explaining that the Troglodyte is friendly and could be really helpful to their mission. If you haven't seen Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger, you may be wondering what a Troglodyte looks like, well here it is.
This is a great example of classic fantasy? To me it's that wonderful collection of fantasy films that were produced long before CGI. The Troglodyte here was brought to life using stop motion animation by the brilliant special effects artist, Ray Harryhausen, and I believe his genius shows best when he blends stop motion into normal filming. A man years ahead of his time.
However, modern fantasy films have seen a fantastic resurgence with the likes of the Tolkien stories, Lord of Rings and the Hobbitt as well as the Harry Potter and Game of Thrones amongst others. To explore further, click on the new links on the left.
